Case Study: How YRC Solved a Buyer‘s Severe Soda Ash Light Caking Problem in a High-Humidity Climate

Caking is one of the most frustrating problems for any Soda Ash Light user. You open a container expecting free-flowing powder, only to find rock-hard lumps. This not only wastes material but can also shut down production lines, clog equipment, and compromise final product quality.

In 2024, a detergent manufacturer in Southeast Asia approached YRC. The Soda Ash Light they had been purchasing from their previous supplier developed widespread caking within just two weeks of arrival. The caking rate exceeded 15%. Production was repeatedly interrupted, workers spent hours manually breaking hard lumps, and efficiency plummeted.

This article shares how YRC diagnosed the problem, implemented solutions, and helped the customer reduce the caking rate to below 1%.

Problem Diagnosis: Why Does Soda Ash Light Cake?

YRC‘s technical team immediately conducted a remote video meeting with the customer and requested warehouse photos, original packaging samples, and images of the caked material. After analysis, we identified three root causes:

High humidity and temperature in the warehouse – The customer’s warehouse is located in a tropical coastal area, where average relative humidity exceeds 80% year-round. Daily temperature fluctuations caused condensation inside shipping containers. Soda Ash Light is naturally hygroscopic. Once it absorbs moisture, the surface dissolves, and when the moisture evaporates, recrystallization forms “bridges” between particles, turning them into hard lumps.

Insufficient moisture protection in packaging – The previous supplier used only ordinary PP woven bags without a moisture-barrier liner. During long ocean voyages (approximately 25 days) and subsequent storage, humidity penetrated easily.

Excessive stacking height and pressure – To save space, the customer stacked bags over 8 layers high. The tremendous pressure on the lower bags further aggravated particle adhesion.

YRC‘s Solutions

Based on the diagnosis, YRC customized a systematic solution rather than simply changing the product specification.

Upgraded Packaging: Double Moisture-Barrier Liner + Special Seam

YRC supplied reinforced PP woven bags with a built-in PE moisture-barrier liner, increasing liner thickness from the standard 0.08mm to 0.12mm. The bags feature heat-sealed bottoms and double-folded seams to maximize moisture resistance. Moisture-warning labels were added to the outside of each bag to remind handlers to avoid puncturing the liner.

Optimized Storage & Stacking Guidelines

YRC provided the customer with a bilingual (English & local language) Soda Ash Light Warehouse Best Practices Manual, including:

Recommended stacking height – no more than 6 layers, with moisture-absorbing cardboard between layers.

Humidity control – suggested installing dehumidifiers to keep relative humidity below 60%.

First-in, first-out (FIFO) – clearly marked production dates to ensure inventory turnover within three months.

YRC even recorded a 5-minute on-site training video demonstrating proper unloading, stacking, and sampling procedures, which the customer’s warehouse staff could watch and follow.

Adjusted Logistics Rhythm & Container Ventilation

YRC recommended the customer adopt a smaller, more frequent batch ordering strategy to avoid excessive stockpiling. During shipment, YRC placed silica gel desiccants inside the containers and reserved ventilation holes on both sides of the containers (for open-top containers or customized solutions) to reduce condensation risks during ocean transit.

Results: Caking Rate Reduced from 15% to Below 1%

After implementing the above solutions, the customer tracked three consecutive batches of arrivals and storage:

Caking rate – dropped from over 15% to less than 1%. The remaining slight lumps could be broken apart with a gentle tap.

Production efficiency – no extra manual crushing step was needed. Material flow from equipment improved by 30%.

Complaints and returns – zero quality complaints related to caking over six consecutive months.

The customer’s purchasing manager wrote in their feedback email: “YRC doesn’t just provide products — they provide real solutions. We now fully trust YRC‘s professional capabilities.”

Conclusion: Choosing a Problem-Solving Partner Matters Far More Than Price Alone

Many buyers focus only on price and purity when sourcing Soda Ash Light, ignoring the “soft links” of packaging, logistics, and storage. In high-humidity regions, these details often determine whether you receive usable raw material or a pile of waste.
